Music Divas

洪福遠 , 1988
伎樂飛天 Music Divas

The picture comes from Dunhuang murals in Gansu Province, China. The main pattern is Divas with five musical instruments. Diva is the God of music in Buddhism. Whenever a Buddhist meeting is held, Diva will fly in the air and sprinkle flowers for singing and dancing. Diva will provide all Buddhas with singing, dancing, music, flowers and food. From left to right, the five Divas play flute, drum, phoenix lute, Xiao and lute in turn. The images of the five Divas come from Cave 15 and Cave 10 of Yulin Cave respectively, from the Tang Dynasty (923-937) to the Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227). The flying ribbon is elegant, showing a free and happy Buddhist fairyland.
