Four Gods of Four Directions

洪福遠 , 1988-1998

Ancient Chinese people imagined the stars in the East, West, South and North as a kind of animal, namely Green Dragon, White Tiger, Rosefinch and Xuanwu. In the figure, the upper left corner is a Green Dragon, the upper right corner is a Rosefinch, the lower left corner is a white Tiger, and the lower right corner is a Xuanwu. These patterns come from the Han Dynasty (202BC-220) Wadang. The Wadang is the hanging part at the top of the tube tile in ancient Chinese architecture. The four God pattern was often used in the Wadang of the Han Dynasty, which reflects the belief of ancient China. Within the circle, the pattern extends strongly, showing the magnificent momentum of the Han Dynasty.
